Minimum Requirements for Drivers’ Licences

Know the key steps and eligibility requirements before you apply for an Ontario driver’s licence or book a road test.

Before You Apply

  • Eligibility begins at 16 years of age; commercial licence age requirements may differ.
  • New Ontario residents licensed in another jurisdiction must apply for an Ontario licence within 60 days of relocating.
  • Acceptable identification is required during the application process.
  • You must meet the applicable medical requirements and pay the relevant fees, which may change.
  • A vision examination, knowledge assessment, and one or more road tests must be successfully completed.
G2

Ontario Class G2 Road Test

This basic driving-skills test is commonly called a city test and usually takes about 20 minutes. Passing it earns you a Class G2 licence.

New drivers generally need one year of driving experience before qualifying. Completing an MTO-recognized driving-school course may reduce this requirement by four months.

G

Ontario Class G Road Test

This advanced skills test includes highway driving and usually takes about 30 minutes. Passing it earns you a full Class G licence.

You need to practise driving for at least one year after receiving your G2 licence before qualifying for the Class G road test.

Graduated licensing

Class G Licences for New Drivers

Driving in Ontario is a privilege that must be earned. To become fully licensed, applicants must be at least 16, meet MTO vision standards, pass a rules-of-the-road and traffic-sign knowledge test, and pass both G2 and G road tests.

Book a Road Test
G1

Class G1

G2

Class G2

Level 2 of graduated licensing. G2 holders may drive Class G vehicles without an accompanying driver. Additional conditions apply, especially for drivers aged 21 or under.

G

Class G

A full licence to drive a car, van, or small truck. Additional conditions apply to drivers aged 21 or under.

Motorcycle & Vehicle Requirements

Get Your Motorcycle Licence

Motorcycle licensing follows a process separate from other vehicle licences. Once you have completed the required waiting periods and gained sufficient experience, you can schedule your road test.

M2 and M motorcycle road tests are generally offered from mid-May to mid-October, weather permitting, with booking beginning May 1. Plan ahead around your motorcycle licence expiry date. For combined licences, such as GM2, the date on the card may relate to the other licence class.

Vehicle Requirements for Your Road Test

Before the test, the driver examiner completes a basic vehicle check to confirm that your vehicle is suitable. You may be asked to help check turn signals, brake lights, windshield condition, tire pressure, or visible damage.

Park and check in at the DriveTest Centre when you arrive. Most centres offer a self-serve kiosk; otherwise, see a customer-service agent. After checking in, return to your vehicle and wait for the examiner.

If the examiner has not arrived within 30 minutes of your appointment time, return directly to the customer-service dispatch counter.

Information source: MTO and DriveTest. Requirements, fees, availability, and testing procedures may change; confirm current details directly with DriveTest before your appointment.

You must hold your M1 permit for at least 60 days before taking the M2 / M1 Exit test. The M1 permit is valid for 90 days total, so you must pass before it expires.

You must hold a G1 licence for at least 12 months. Completing a Ministry-approved Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course reduces this waiting period to 8 months.

You must hold a G2 licence for a minimum of 12 consecutive months before taking the G test. Taking a driving course does not shorten this timeframe.

Valid G1 for 12+ months.

Drivers from non-reciprocal countries are limited to 12 months of foreign driving credit. They cannot skip the G2 test and must observe a 12-month wait between passing the G2 and attempting the full G test.

Yes, extensions are available to eligible applicants for a maximum of 42 days. You must book your road test before your licence expires to be eligible for an extension. Please note that the extension is valid only up until the day of your road test. If you have an extension and are unsuccessful with your road test, you cannot book another road test without meeting other requirements (e.g., completing another knowledge test).
