Book MKnow the key steps and eligibility requirements before you apply for an Ontario driver’s licence or book a road test.
This basic driving-skills test is commonly called a city test and usually takes about 20 minutes. Passing it earns you a Class G2 licence.
New drivers generally need one year of driving experience before qualifying. Completing an MTO-recognized driving-school course may reduce this requirement by four months.
This advanced skills test includes highway driving and usually takes about 30 minutes. Passing it earns you a full Class G licence.
You need to practise driving for at least one year after receiving your G2 licence before qualifying for the Class G road test.
Driving in Ontario is a privilege that must be earned. To become fully licensed, applicants must be at least 16, meet MTO vision standards, pass a rules-of-the-road and traffic-sign knowledge test, and pass both G2 and G road tests.
Book a Road TestLevel 1 of graduated licensing. G1 holders may drive Class G vehicles when accompanied by a fully licensed driver with at least four years of experience. Additional conditions apply.
Level 2 of graduated licensing. G2 holders may drive Class G vehicles without an accompanying driver. Additional conditions apply, especially for drivers aged 21 or under.
A full licence to drive a car, van, or small truck. Additional conditions apply to drivers aged 21 or under.
Motorcycle licensing follows a process separate from other vehicle licences. Once you have completed the required waiting periods and gained sufficient experience, you can schedule your road test.
M2 and M motorcycle road tests are generally offered from mid-May to mid-October, weather permitting, with booking beginning May 1. Plan ahead around your motorcycle licence expiry date. For combined licences, such as GM2, the date on the card may relate to the other licence class.
Before the test, the driver examiner completes a basic vehicle check to confirm that your vehicle is suitable. You may be asked to help check turn signals, brake lights, windshield condition, tire pressure, or visible damage.
Park and check in at the DriveTest Centre when you arrive. Most centres offer a self-serve kiosk; otherwise, see a customer-service agent. After checking in, return to your vehicle and wait for the examiner.
If the examiner has not arrived within 30 minutes of your appointment time, return directly to the customer-service dispatch counter.
